Allergic To God?

2 Timothy 3:1-5 The Message

Don’t be naive. There are difficult times ahead. As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God. They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people.

Have you noticed anything different lately?

There is no doubt that as things are escalating in our culture, our country and in this world, it is so easy to see the things spoken hundreds and thousands of years ago coming to pass even faster than we've been accustomed to in the Word of God.

It is so easy to get sucked up into the hype and the drama. So easy to find ourselves being defined by the scripture above.

Eugene Peterson, the writer of the message actually translated the words "allergic to God".

Here is a definition of allergic

al·ler·gic
əˈlərjik/
adjective
adjective: allergic

caused by or relating to an allergy.
having an allergy to (a substance).
having a strong dislike for.

1. WE'RE TOLD NOT TO BE NAIVE

Because it is very possible for us to be.

2. WE KNOW DIFFICULTIES ARE COMING

As tough as it is, it will get worse.

3. STAY CLEAR

Not only of spending our time desensitized to the items listed above, but of actually becoming "that" person.

Those are some pretty powerful and clear points. We never want to just blow people off, how else will they get to know Jesus if we don't spend time with people. There is a difference between spending time with people to show them Jesus vs. casually living a life of the "yeah..I'm a Christian" kind of life.

I spend every week talking to my children about honestly serving Christ. Passionately knowing him and who we are in him.

My friends, I want to encourage you today to do a self-examination. Can you see any of the attributes in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 in your life? I have to do the same thing and honestly, I have to repent very often. I have to learn to die to myself. I have to learn that I am crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but He lives in me.

Then, if He is living in me, how do people relate to Him when I walk into a room? When I am alone with my family? When I am alone with myself?

A lot to think of today, I know. I am in no way pointing a finger, what I am doing is making us aware of something more real that what we are hearing on TV and the radio and social media every day.

Dig in. Be honest. Never Quit. Never forget....
