Authority and My Vote

ROMANS 13:1 ESV. Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

Well, here we are.  November 8, 2016. Everyone is thinking about it, everyone is talking about it, but is everyone praying about it? Probably not.

We are told to pray for those in authority.  The bible is very clear as to our role when it comes toleadership:

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.
Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 NLT

I get it, we live in a land of democracy. We have a right to vote. We have a right to speak out and speak up. But as a Christian, I/We have a spiritual obligation to be obedient to God's Word and pray for these people. As a proud vet and American citizen, I have a personal opinion, but I AM CHRISTIAN FIRST AND FOREMOST. My opinion about politics is pointless, my obedience to God about how I handle those in leadership over me is everything.

Again, I have an opinion, but that opinion is not something that is important enough to blog about, post about on FB or any other social platform. Although we have had some bad leadership (and will no doubt face that as long as we live on this planet) in our country and others, authority has it's purpose. As a law abiding citizen, I don't fear authority. Authority is in place primarily to keep order. We all have our opinions about how that is being handled, however, my job is to pray and pray daily that those in authority will be used by God to do His will.

I wonder sometimes if the reason we see such travesty in leadership (because nowhere in the bible does it say leadership must be Christian) is because WE are not serious enough about our role to properly and passionately pray for our leaders.

Oh, I pray all the time Matt.  Really? What are you praying? Many times I have heard people's prayers for leadership. It seems that those prayers many times contain a certain bias towards a persons desire. If we are obedient, we are praying that regardless of who is in that leadership, that God's will will be done through that person or persons.

I am honored to serve the King of all kings. The Ruler of all rulers. The Leader of all leaders. To Him my allegiance is forever. I voted. I prayed about my vote. I voted because I'd like to see that candidate in office, however, I am open to whatever happens, because at the end of the day, whether my candidate wins or loses, my God is STILL KING! I trust in Him and Him alone.

I want to encourage you to properly support leadership.  Whether it is your boss at work, a teacher at school, a leader in local government or the President of the United States of America.

My prayer is that our leaders will make good and godly decisions. My prayer is that leadership will strive to be the best they possibly can be. My prayer is that when these leaders who are always privy to much more information that we are and most likely will ever be, will handle that information with incredible care and passion. I pray our leaders have a clear and open mind, to not be swayed by varied opinions, but in those opinions they seek the truth and follow their hearts whoever they may be.

My prayer is that those who call themselves Christians, really are followers of Christ and lead from that position. May we be people of example.  Good example. May our passions for Him greatly outweigh our passion to be right or our desire to prove a point. May we be people that honor our King by the way we follow our leaders. When we have a disagreement and because we are afforded the opportunity to live in the greatest nation of freedom on the planet, may we not take that for granted, but reverently and passionately seek God first and speak from what we know He has spoken to us. He is a God of order.

Lord, may you have your way. May you touch the heart of our leaders. I pray that your will be done and I trust in you and you alone. Thank you for the gift of the United States of America, and may it be used for your glory.... In all things people, and in the midst of a media storm over the next few days.. remember..... #GodsGotThis
